Biography

Originally from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, artist Stephen Skinner creates abstract works that reflect a profound connection to nature and place—particularly the landscapes of Byron Shire. With surf trips to the region forming a core part of his childhood memories, Byron has long been more than a destination; it’s a source of inspiration and creative grounding that continues to shape his artistic journey.

Stephen is a self-taught artist whose practice is defined by an intuitive use of colour, layered textures, and expressive contrast. Drawing inspiration from the raw beauty of the natural world, his work explores emotional depth through abstract forms. "The colours and textures of nature are what inspire my layers and contrasts," he says. "I create art to express emotions that are often hard to put into words—feelings like vulnerability, awe, and quiet strength."

Each piece invites viewers into a moment of connection—whether to a memory, an emotion, or a part of themselves they may not have fully acknowledged. While Stephen brings his own experiences to the canvas, he welcomes the personal interpretations others bring to his work. “I hope it makes space for people to pause and connect—either with themselves or with the world around them.”

After a decade living and travelling across Europe, Stephen returned to Australia, where he now lives with his wife and two young children. Balancing family life with a deepening commitment to his art practice, he continues to refine his voice and expand his body of work.

Stephen has exhibited in both Australia and the UK, including Art Below at London Underground (2010), Brick Lane Gallery (2012), Gallery109 (2021), Michael Reid Gallery – Northern Beaches (2022), ArtKind Gallery (July 2023), and Mist Gallery, Cabarita Beach (September 2023). His work has also been featured in British Vogue (UK) and included in collaborative projects with Designer Boys Australia, Bohdi Living (Byron Bay), and Nowe Studios (Bangalow, NSW) 2025.

Looking ahead, Stephen is focused on continuing to develop a meaningful and authentic art practice. He aims to exhibit in more galleries, grow his collector base, and secure ongoing representation. With a desire to see his work integrated into community spaces, he’s committed to pushing creative boundaries and exploring new materials and techniques as his practice evolves.

Stephen is open to commissions.
